Advice often tells you to keep pushing forward. To keep on swimming. Rarely do we think of what we could do if we just took a step backwards and looked around.

The best leaders are not the ones always pushing to go forward (in a literal sense at least). They are the ones who are cognizant of the opportunity to take some steps backwards in order to later go forwards.

Do you watch soccer?

The best teams do not just kick the ball up the middle and chase after it.

The best teams work the ball around the sides. They pass forwards, then backwards. They move it around.

Why?

Because they need to do that in order to eventually score a goal.

The objective is the same: score.

But they recognize that that does not always come from jamming the ball forwards.

The same thing is true in business. You will not always win by just going hard at a few strategies that you decided months ago. Sometimes you have to take an objective look at what you are doing. If it calls for it, reset. “Pivot.” Move in the opposite direction.

Just make sure that that move is still eventually aligned with your end goal.

Move onward.
