As I mentioned in a previous blog post, I spent the past weekend venturing around the city of Taipei and I had only good things to say about it. If you ever go to Taiwan, make sure you eat a lot of food — because it is very noteworthy.

You will also likely venture into one of many night markets that are scattered around the city. These night markets are world famous for their fresh, exotic and extremely inexpensive foods.

We went to the Shilin Night Market — the largest market in the country — and were really impressed with the atmosphere and diverse selection of tasty foods.

If you know me well, you know that I have a special affinity for markets, as, in high school, I had started a business working at a Farmers’ Market selling produce. I can deeply empathize with the struggle of waking up at the break of dawn and setting up shop for incoming customers. I intimately understand the challenge of standing on your feet all day, dealing with inventory and trying to get rid of product.

I know.

And I really respect the workers at these night markets who likely work long hours for very little pay.

Anyways, I found traveling to these markets to be a great way to interact with locals and get a vibe of the city. These markets cover the streets of the city and show just how important food is to the culture of Taiwan.
