A rule that I made for myself earlier this year, as I began to more seriously start reading and reading and reading, is that I would purchase any book I was interested in diving into. This rule – the Unlimited Books Rule – has cost me something like $300 this school year as I have now consumed dozens of physical books. I generally buy used books which are a bit cheaper than new ones.
I have never made an “unlimited rule” before as I do not have unlimited money to throw around. I can say, with confidence, that enabling myself to read and making it a non-problem (from a mindset perspective) when I want to read has been massively impactful.
I know this is a luxury and not everyone can afford to spend on books. I would say prioritizing this investment over others will reap long term benefits that far outweigh the opportunity cost of my existing capital.
