To me, Kobe Bryant is more than just an athlete. Of all the things I learned from watching him, here are 8 of my favorite.

#1 — Age is Just A Number

young mamba

Throughout his career, Kobe never let his age define him. And that goes both ways. It applies to when he was a young “kid” coming out of high school to the NBA just as it transfers to his final years. His age never defined him.

#2— Don’t stop after your first victory

woahhhhhh

It’s very easy for successful people to be content with where they are at. Kobe did not need to go for more rings. In fact, many times his body probably told him not to. But winners, true winners, do whatever it takes.

#3 — Mentors are important

Shaq accelerated Kobe’s growth from a young age. While they did not get along some of the time, the two became very successful together. Find people way out of your league and work with them. High school Kobe got that much better by working with the Diesel. I try to find people like Shaq to help me move forward.

#4 — Everyone needs a beast mode

Have you ever watched Kobe late in the game? (kids born today can never say that) It’s when his beast mode comes out. I am a believer in that everyone needs to have a beast mode at their disposal. And to save it for super-hero moments. You’ll know when you need it.

#5 — Work really fucking hard

Kobe worked really really hard throughout his career (and before it). He was that much better than everyone else on the court because he had practiced that much more. I am not arguing that natural athleticism is not a factor — but Kobe was never the tallest or fastest on the court. He just knew more about the game and had played it way more.

#6 — Even if you work hard, things can go badly

Sure Kobe won a lot of games. But he also lost, many many times. He missed many many shots. He got injured. Bad stuff happened throughout his career. What’s important, though, is that he never strayed from his mission (through the good and the bad). He was in it for the long haul, and always stayed core to his mission and to his fans.

#8 — Record are meant to be broken

Kobe never shied away from opportunities merely because no-one had ever done it before him. He embraced opportunities to be different. In doing so, he changed the way the game would be played — forever. #kobefade

#8— Legends never die

If you dedicate your life to something — you will be remembered. Kobe came into the league on a mission. And never strayed.

BONUS: #tbt to when I met Kobe!
