Snapchat is a growing company. I have written about them many times. They brand themselves as a “camera company,” but I can assure you they represent far more. I am not going to say I am “bullish” on Snapchat, nor am I obsessed with them.
But what I can tell you is that they are looking in an interesting direction, and that was solidified with the introduction of Snapchat Games.
They have been toying with the idea of “Filter Games” for a while now, so it is great to see them finally bringing it to the public.
In the next year, I expect Snapchat to continue putting out, essentially, augmented reality games that not only make sense for users, as they get to have a lot of fun, but also for brands and companies that can sponsor games.
Expect “challenges” where you can interact with physical objects in the real world and use them via your camera.
I also expect Snapchat to integrate “live Snapchatting” / “live streaming” straight from the app.
I expect them to roll out a more toned down version of their spectacles that make more sense for more users.
And the last core issue is that they need to find a way to work better with influencers. They’ll do that with better search and better discovery features.
They need to move faster than messenger and instagram who have the advantage of network effects. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out a year or so from now.
