How to get help
I’ve come to realize, over the last year or so, that building connections and working with other people is one of the best ways to find answers to your problems.
Building these relationships never comes easy. And often times, it is not entirely organic. Most of the time you have to step outside of your comfort zone to get what you want.
And that comes in the form of writing a cold email to someone you look up to or walking up to someone at a conference. Taking those micro leaps of faith is what separates the “hustlers” from the watchers in life. After a while, those leaps of faith become less scary — and you are able to start focusing on the important part — which is the actual conversation or chat that you want to have with that person.
Most people never get to the conversation part — so it is something we rarely focus on. But once you do get there, it is really easy to mess up. Once you build up the courage to start sending emails, etc. , focus on doing these things:
- Ask for something specific. Like an answer to a particular question or a story about some certain experience. Know that other people want to feel important, regardless of who they are.
- Make your ask succinct and actionable.
- Follow up, always.
- Help for free when you can
