Soon enough, we are not going to know whether or not our interactions are with humans or “artificial intelligence.” Everyone wants to get in on this new space — filled with bots, assistants, and deep learning theory.

But a lot of the poor implementations of this technology have saturated the market. The bots that will remain will the be those that are specialized in areas that actually make sense to the consumer.

So what are these areas?

I am not a big believer in the online shopping experience being enhanced by bots. I do not foresee a world where I will chat someone to get my clothes. To me, that adds friction. And that friction < marginal utility and convenience.

But, I do see some applications of these bots as potential life-enhancers. Those that solve important problems.

Areas I see:

  • Customer Service
  • Automating Human Tasks

But of course, there are so many more niche implementations. What I look for, though, is a narrow approach to solving a problem.

The real winners, though, will be the chat communication platforms that are able to best integrate these growing technologies. They will serve as the de-facto communication service and will reap all of the benefits in the experimentation of technology.
