For what it’s worth, I generally discount mainstream career advice. It is normally out there to sell you something, rather than provide you actionable strategies for growth.

The best advice I’ve ever gotten as it pertains to careers is very simple: surround yourself with the best people.

I agree. I am a huge proponent of people. People have changed my life, and it’s not by accident. The best people consistently do the best things. The best companies are built by the best people.

“Best” is a hard word. It is up to you decide what it really means.

But once you make your definition, the challenge is a) finding those people and b) connecting with them.

Finding people can be hard.

I have written about that before: https://gonen.blog/how-to-find-people-to-work-on-projects-with

When you work at a big company, it can be overwhelming sifting through the masses of talent.

So how do the best people stick out?

You’ll have to pay close attention to the little things.

The best people ask you questions.

The best people are first to work and last to leave.

The best people are owners, they work with purpose.

The best people apologize.

The best people are eternally optimistic, yet ever so cautious.

The best people understand empathy.

Who are your best people? What do they do differently?

You can notice these people in meetings, during lunch, etc. You may have to purposely go out of your way to find them. But you will know. People know who the rock stars are. They are not necessarily loud and talkative. They may be introverted. They may be managers. They may be interns.

Whoever they are — find them.
