I try to always focus on the micro-version of the situation. I think society tends to glamorize the big-picture, the macro-lens, when in reality it is often best to break things down into very small components and start attacking them one piece at a time.

The micro is not as sexy as the macro. We all rather figure out the macro but to get there, we must intimately understand the micro.

The macro is the question of “what do you want to do with your life?” Everyone asks this question in college (and before) expecting you to have some mature and well-defined answer.

My answer, I really have no idea. I do not have a life mantra that will not change. I do not have a crystal ball where I know where I will be in 10, 20 years.

Instead…I like the micro…”What do you want to get done in the next few months, weeks, days?”

I find that more people have a bullshit answer for the macro and no answer whatsoever for the micro?

How do you expect to get to some overarching goal without experiments to run in the short-term?

The macro is the idea that you should come up with a company that will change an industry before diving into the little pieces that make that industry work.

Government is the macro. Healthcare is the macro.

Focusing on the micro-aspects of your life — things that you can directly control — is a very freeing feeling.
