This essay is about a very small but subtle detail that makes a difference to people — and that is the notion of responding. When people reach out, I always want to respond.

So many people have helped me in my life, I know just how valuable it can be for someone to take a chance on you.

This response can take many forms. I generally try and say as much as possible in the least amount of words.

I also try and avoid giving general advice. I find that normally does not end well. I also do not tell people what type of career they should do or how they should spend their time.

I think they can decide that on their own.

Even if I cannot help people, I still respond.

Because responding is 10x more helpful than not responding.

I rather hear a no than nothing.

I rather be rejected quickly than never responded to.

I rather rip the band aid off then slowly peel it.
