I am a big proponent of breaking the routine, on purpose, as a vehicle for bringing about freshness and change to my life.

One of my favorite ways to break the routine, and quite ironically the hardest one for me, is to just disconnect from the rest of my life and do something completely different.

Often times that takes the shape of some sort of outdoor activity, like hiking or running or playing a sport.

It is during those moments…without my phone…or computer…or worries…that I learn the most about what it is like to relax.

It is something similar to the “flow state” {

“In positive psychology, flow, also known as the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.

Essentially, when I feel fully immersed in an activity that I am doing, I forget about everything else. I forget about everything that I am missing out on my phone. I forget about all of my other responsibilities and become completely absorbed in the moment.

Reality makes it hard to do that well and sustainably.

But I imagine it is possible — if you find people you enjoy working with.

I think I should take more opportunities to disconnect from the rest of the world. There are way too many distractions and pressures out there.
